Practiced by sailors to pass the time on long voyages, Scrimshaw is the engraving of whale bone, tusks, ivory etc.

Common through the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly on whaling expeditions, this form of art often depicts nautical themes and the world sailors had to leave behind.

I was first introduced to Scrimshaw 3 years ago at the Greenwich Maritime Museum in London and I was captivated. Although wrought with problematic connotations and brutality, the idea of sailors on these whaling ships living extended periods of their lives out at sea and these being mementos of those journeys stuck with me. Beyond that, the images and themes shown  are much like the nautical designs I have always liked- think sailor tattoos, coastal towns etc.

The history, provenance and imagery all left  a marked impact on me.

This is my first cohesive (albeit somewhat small) collection of Jewellery for sale and each is one of one, telling its own little story.

Every piece is handmade and hand engraved, depicting sea creatures and events, inspired by the Scrimshaw and maritime art I have seen.

The collection is meant to captivate my love and wonder of the ocean and its creatures, not to glorify the bloodshed and violence that has and unfortunately continues to occur on it
